What is AAVE?
AAVE is the governance token of Aave, a lending protocol where users supply assets to earn interest and borrow against collateral. Holders vote on risk parameters, which assets can be listed and how the treasury is used. The maximum supply is 16 million tokens.
AAVE can also be staked in the Safety Module. Stakers earn rewards, and in return part of their stake can be used to cover a shortfall if the protocol ever ends up with bad debt.

Staking can be slashed
AAVE staked in the Safety Module backs the protocol. If Aave suffers a shortfall, part of the stake can be sold to cover it.
Protocol risk
The token value is tied to the health of the lending protocol: a smart contract bug or a large bad debt event would hit both.
Price volatility
Like other governance tokens, AAVE can move sharply. Large orders on networks other than Ethereum see more price impact.
